About a month ago, we discovered one morning our pond had been disturbed by some raccoons the night before. They had knocked off one of the heavy slate rocks we had placed on top of our "fish house". Over the next couple of weeks we noticed the pond slowly leaking water. Damien made several attempts to find and fix the leak without draining more water. We thought the problem was fixed at one point, but his attempts failed and the pond kept leaking water.
With the water level dropping we knew we had to try to save our fish. A couple of nights ago, we went to Home Depot and purchased a preformed 125 gallon plastic pond (which fit nicely in the Highlander). We filled it half way with city water, then the rest with pond water. Then last night we carefully transferred the fish, plants, pump, and filter to the new pond. We also put some hard plastic mesh on top and secured it to the temporary pond to keep those "masked" intruders out.
Now we are on a quest to figure out how to fix the pond. Some thoughts are making a cement pond or purchasing a new liner. Hopefully we can get a "professional" out to look at our problem and help us with the decision. At least for now, the fish are safe and seem to be doing fine in their new cramped quarters. Unfortunately for the frogs, who like to use the pond for mating, they will have to find another pond until next Spring.
